Angola

Angola had a civil war from 1975-2005 but now it is peaceful and tourism is in its infancy. Apart from a tour of Luanda my main goal was to explore the south of the country which fringes the Namib desert and has a great diversity of ethnic groups. These tribal peoples are largely untouched by tourism and are diverse. Some of the tribes are also found in Namibia and regularly cross the Kunene river. These include the San people, Ovahimba and Mucawana. Other tribes living in this remote semi arid region of Cunene and Namibe include the Mutua, Muila, Mucubal, Handa, Cuepe, Mugambue and Nguendelengo. To get to these ethnic groups we flew south to Lubango. The landscapes of Southern Angola are also appealing and especially the 'badlands' of Curoca and the impressive escarpment at Tunda Vala. There are also ancient prehistoric etchings at Tchitundu Hulo which are possibly 20,000 years old.
