The Highlands and Islands of Scotland are a dreamscape for landscape photographers. The mountains and glens of the Glencoe area with waterfalls, lakes and ancient cottages with mountainous backdrops. Skye has the Cuillins, fairy pools, Kilt rock, Elgol beach, the Quiriang, the old bridge at Sligachan and much more. Ancient castles like Eilean Donan are almost blended with the sea and land. Whilst on Harris and Lewis we spend time photographing the amazing sandy and rocky beaches of West Harris which faces the full force of the Atlantic Ocean. Here is is very useful to have a tripod and filters to truly capture motion and flow. Some of the beaches we go to are Losgaintir, Bagh Steinigidh, Northton beach and salt marshes, Traigh na Cleabhaig and anywhere with the right conditions (light, waves, rocks) to shoot. Sometimes it’s the unexpected which enables a great capture. We also visit the Callanish Stones for the sunset. The stone circle is comprised of 13 stones plus a huge monolith that stands in the middle, and is 5000 years old. A total of five stone rows are connected to the circle and main monolith. Two of the longest rows run in parallel and form what the archaeologists like to call “The Avenue.” This avenue is made up of 19 stones, the largest of which is 3.5 meters and stretches across 83 meters.
