Socotra, Yemen, 2021
Socotra is an island belonging to Yemen in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. It is actually closer to Somalia than Yemen and it largely inhabited by bedouin people and those of African origin on the coast. It is renowned for its endemism with 30% of its species only found here. The island has a mountainous interior with mountains and forests of Dragon's Blood trees. Elsewhere there are Bottle, Frankincense and Cucumber trees. The island is fringed by incredible dune systems with the ones along the north coast being created by strong monsoons and blown up against cliff faces. There are beautiful creeks and wadis which have turquoise or green waters and are wonderful to swim in. There is little development so you have to camp on beautiful reef fringed beaches and indulge in wonderful seafood. An extraordinary paradise.
