A country only recognised by Djibouti and Ethiopia. Few tourists come here but it was safe, if challenging! We were often taken for journalists, hence taking photographs was difficult. There is little development and their currency, the shilling, is sold by the brickload! The people were wary but, in general, friendly. The scars of the past were only too evident. There are, however, some amazing places to visit. The rock art (5000-10,000 years old) at Las Geel was only discovered in 2002 and is in perfect condition. The escarpments and forests at Erigavo, very difficult to get to but the scenery is very impressive.
